What this quiz covers

The line call questions map the whole system. Jurisdiction: each team calls the lines on its own end, and in doubles either partner may call. The standard of proof: an out call requires clearly seeing space between the ball and the line — "probably out" is in. Promptness: the call comes immediately, by voice or signal, or it is no call at all. The tiebreakers: partners who disagree have, by rule, called the ball in; an opponent's opinion, once asked and given clearly, stands. And the master principle over all of it: every questionable call resolves in favor of the opponent.

Every answer cites its rule — 8.A through 8.J — including the 2026 wording refinements, like "doubt" becoming "conflict" in the partner-disagreement rule and the hard ban on consulting spectators.

Why this section wins games

Bad line calling loses points twice: once when you concede a rally you should not have, and once when an overconfident call poisons the next three games. Teams that know the actual standards — who may call what, on which end, with what certainty — play faster, argue less, and keep the points the rules actually give them. That is the entire pitch of this quiz theme.

Sample questions from the quiz

True or false — straight from the deck:

"A player must clearly see a space between the line and the ball to call it out." · "A ball that touches a court line during a rally is out." · "If doubles partners disagree on a line call, the ball is considered out." · "A player may ask their opponent's opinion on a line call." · "An 'out' call must be made promptly by voice, hand signal, or both."

Common questions

Who calls the ball in or out in pickleball?

Each team makes the out calls for the lines on its own end of the court; in doubles, either partner may call (Rule 8.A of the 2026 rulebook). Questionable calls resolve in favor of the opponent.

What happens if you are not sure a ball was out?

It is in. An out call requires clearly seeing space between the ball and the line when it lands, and any ball that cannot be promptly called out must be considered in (Rules 8.D and 8.E).
